(AKA, have backups to important functions, such as "power to engines", etc.) Don't panic when you're in a pickle, as your tone of voice can cause the command not to fire. Use a quality microphone, preferably one that is part of headset to reduce background noise. Train your voice recognition with Microsoft Speech Recognition (including the tutorial, as that helps train it as well.) I'd also like to second the tips presented above as well, to make VA a truly useful experience, rather than a giant ball of frustration. It takes some work, granted, but if you're into it, it's possible. In this way, you don't have to have the voice to enjoy the feedback. If you're so inclined to use an audio editing program, such as Audacity (free), you can type in responses to your VA commands into the website, play them there in the ivona voice, record them at the same time with Audacity, and save them as sound files, which VA can play upon activation of a command. For those not willing to shell out $45 US for an Ivona Voice, you CAN use the website ( to "preview" a voice.

It limits your commands to 20 (I think), but I think you'll quickly find the software worth the $8 US for the full version.
IVONA VOICE INFLECTION TRIAL
Like those above, I highly recommend trying out the trial VA. VA + Ivona: Amy + ED + Oculus Rift = Religious experience. After a short while you will see it start to reproduce sounds it thinks it can hear in your total silence and sometimes the text can look like a conversation going on that you can't actually hear yourself. Just to scare the bejebus out of yourself sit in a totally silent room, don't move too much and start VA but don't speak. I had a command "lights" to switch the lights on or off and the ambient room noise seemed to reproduce this word fairly often so my ship was constantly flashing it lights on and off. Make your commands MORE than one word, single word commands are easily misheard by VA where a phrase is more difficult for a random room sound to imitate. Try to make your commands in the same tone and inflection every time, screaming OPEN HARDPOINTS! when normally you talk quietly is destined to make VA ignore that command as "not understood"

If at all possible reduce the extraneous sounds in the room to zero or an absolute minimum. Try to use a good quality unidirectional mic, I have a mic I used for skype at one point and when connected VA would "hear" a constant ssssss Every sentence "heard" in the VA text box looked like that snake from the Jungle Book.
IVONA VOICE INFLECTION WINDOWS
Train windows to understand your voice, don't skip this and do it several times to be sure. This obviously affects it's operation as it has to hear your commands as distinct snippets of sound and this just doesn't work if her indoors and the kids are having a convo.īasically to get VA working optimally you have to. at one point I was watching it "listening" to the news fairly accurately. If you watch the VA app while playing in a noisy room you will see the app "hearing" the other sounds in the room.

In a totally quiet room then my VA gets every command first time every time, but when other people are in or the TV is on then I can expect my voice to get mixed with the other sounds in the room and some commands fail to be heard, but that is the only problem, failing to be heard, this isn't VA's fault more yours for not providing it with clear, unencumbered commands. I bought a Turtle beach headset for the mic which is great except that it's omnidirectional and a unidirectional mic would be so much better. you do have to have a fairly reasonable quality mic and good control over the sound in the area you are. I've used VA for months now, since I started in the Premium Beta and I find it works excellently.
